Happy Holidays from the team @ Howie's

Spring is here

Spring – Get those pesky home maintenance tasks off your to-do list.

As we hit September it’s safe to say that ‘winter’, as it is here in Melbourne, is officially behind us.  Spring has arrived and we get a few months of beautiful weather of warm days and nice nights before the full heat kicks in.  Golf, fishing, biking, boating or time with family and friends, this really is the nicest time of year.  For many, spring also means getting caught up on their ‘To do’ list of home repair, home improvement and home maintenance checklists.

If you’ve reached the point where you either do not have the time, do not have the desire, or do not have the know-how to complete some or all of the items on your personal to-do list, then please consider giving Howie’s Handyman Services a call.  We can knock out that list while you spend time on things you enjoy.

Working With Children Approved

For all of those customers who require their handyman/contractor to be in the possession of a Working with Children Card - Glenn (your friendly Handyman)has been through the rigours of this process and issued with a card. Please request evidence of the card if required.

New Service - Testing and Tagging

Howie's is proud to announce that we are now able to perform Testing and Tagging of your plug-in electrical equipment and Residual Current Devices (RCDs) in accordance with the Australian New Zealand Standard AS/NZS3760-2010.

IT'S THE LAW... Is your business complying?

As prescribed by the Occupational Safety and Health Regulations , the person having control of a workplace or access to that workplace, i.e. employer, self-employed person, main contractor, must ensure that all plug-in electrical equipment and residual current devices (RCDs) at the workplace are safe and appropriately inspected, tested and tagged and by a competent and trained person.

Under the Victorian Occupational Health and Safety Act (2004), the employer has a legal obligation to ensure that the workplace and the plant at the workplace is safe and without risks to health (Section 21). This means identifying whether there are any hazards associated with electrical equipment, assessing the associated risks and taking measures to eliminate or control those risks.

July Update

Just a quick note to let you all know how valuable your custom has been to our business venture.

Like all small business owners, the decision to become self employed is a really big call! Despite our earlier anxiety we are pleased to say that all indications suggest that we must be doing something right.

We have had excellent clientele (thank you); you have all paid your bills promptly (thank you) and we have had no reports yet of dissatisfaction with the cost or quality of our services.

Unfortunately for some, we have not been able to respond to your needs immediately - hopefully you will understand that as a small team we do our best to look after multiple clients and guarantee that any the wait will be worthwhile in terms of customer service, price and quality.

Once again, thank you very much for supporting our business.

SEASONAL UPKEEP SERVICE - winter

It's Not To Early To Get Ready For Old Man Winter…

Winter's coming and so are the heating bills, buggar! No need to worry though, Howie’s Handyman has tips and tricks to help you save on the dreaded electrical bill. We have easy tips that you can do yourself (we can always take care of them if you are too busy), to some more laborious items perfect for us to install that will pay for themselves in one winter. We will focus on the fundamental problems that result in heat loss; drafts and insulation.

Locating and correcting air leaks can range anywhere from 5% to 30% per year in energy savings. Checking for indoor air leaks in areas such as gaps along Skirting boards or the edge of flooring. Checking some of these common places that are also notorious for nasty heat-zapping drafts:

smoke alarms

Is it time to replace your smoke detectors batteries or maybe even upgrade to the latest detectors?

Did you know All smoke alarms:

• Contain a battery

• Need to be tested regularly

• Need to be replaced after 10 years.

All fire services in Australia recommend photo-electric smoke alarms when installing or replacing existing smoke alarms.

There are also many rules and regulations that you need to be aware of - check them out here.
